What a lucky duck I’ve been lately, taken out to a string of overwhelmingly fantastic shows! First up was Sydney Dance Company’s De Novo, the most unexpected piece of contemporary dance I’ve ever seen. It was extraordinary, with incredible choreography and impossible bodies. But also what was so surprising, an alien vs predator themed dance, and a postmodern dialectic coupled …
Portrait in Novi Sad, Serbia
Some curious and colourful street art in Novi Sad, Serbia. Who is it, I wonder? And what does it say? And why does there appear to be a little pack of cigarettes in the bottom right corner? The street art was unusually at odds with the general historic feel of the city centre. The lovely town has so many gorgeous …
Sydney Festival Reviews
Inside Last night I saw Frank Woodley’s new show Inside at the Spiegeltent, and is a work of genius! It was such a marvelous mixture of humour, absurdity and character. We cackled the whole way through, but there’s also a weird existential underlying twist, as the Russian prisoners contemplate the outside world without knowledge of it or a chance of …
SMAC & MOFO
A few exciting and let’s face it, tragically hip things going on this weekend! Last night was the Sydney Art Music & Culture awards, hosted by FBi at Carriageworks. I am so proud that our 2012 Sydney Fringe Festival project, Mystery Bus was nominated for an award. Its a great recognition of the hard work that we put into the …
City Lights: Sydney Meets Japan
Last night I attended the launch of an exciting project called City Lights. Using technology and creativity, Sydney and Yokohama, Japan will be connected innovatively. An ensemble of young people underwent a creative development with multimedia artist David Kirkpatrick and Japanese dancer/designer Anna Kuroda. The results have led to an installation which appears in the Cleland Bond building, the Rocks, …
Dog shrine in Brooklyn, New York
We were searching Brooklyn’s backstreets for espresso coffee and were directed down towards the desolate waterline. As we walked through the puddles we happened upon an odd shrine. To a long departed, much loved pet? And this strange tribute to a banana, accompanying it off to the side. Later defiled by someone crass, no doubt.
Dead bird graffiti in Redfern, Sydney
If you fight your way through the swarms of students pushing their way towards Redfern station, you can see this lovely piece on Lawson Street. It looks great in situ against the colour of the worn brickwork with a wacky car as an accessory in the foreground.
Mystery Bus 2012 Wrap Up
Last week we wrapped up another successful season of Mystery Bus for the Sydney Fringe Festival. Once again sell-out crowds were wowed by a showcase of some of Sydney’s best underground artists and venues across eight themed nights. The bus arrived to greet unsuspecting punters outside the Enmore Theatre and took them to different secret locations each night for a …
Blue Man Hogmanay, Edinburgh 2010
New Year’s Day, 2010. I was in the bitter cold of Edinburgh, Scotland, wearing everything I owned to combat the -6 degree cold. While my friends nursed their Hogmanay hangovers, I emerged that evening as the sun was shyly withdrawing behind the horizon, and made my way along the Royal Mile, past frozen puddles and debris abandoned after the festivities …

My clever housemate, friend and local producer Eleanor Winkler has had her work accepted into Your Film Festival. This international Youtube festival has only two Sydney entries in the final cut – both by Miss Winkler. She is a former Tropfest winner, prolific advocate for accessible media and premiering a new film next week! Watch, vote and support Aussie film-making. You …
